Vanderbilt Downs Austin Peay 38 To 3

The Vanderbilt Commodores started slow but eventually cruised past the Austin Peay Governors 38-3 at Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturday. Although the Govs came out tough, Austin Peay could not contain their second straight SEC opponent as Vanderbilt put 38 points on the board for the victory. The Govs defense forced Vanderbilt into a three and out on their first drive and held the commodores to only three points in the first quarter.

However, the Govs defense could not restrain the high-powered Vanderbilt offense for long as the Commodores put up 35 unanswered points in the second quarter to make it 38-0 at the half. The Commodores were on a vengeance after suffering a tough loss against Ole Miss in their season opener last week and they definitely took it out on the Govs Saturday. The commodores had 442 total yards with 21 first downs. Vanderbilt quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels went 14 for 22 and had 223 total yards with one touchdown in the air. Commodore running back Brian Kimbrow led Vanderbilt’s rushing attack with 45 yards on 8 rushes with one touchdown and running back Jerron Seymour had 42 yards on 9 attempts with one touchdown.

“We have been playing in the Southeastern Conference for two weeks,” said Cannon. “I think both Tennessee and Vanderbilt are bowl teams and they are good teams at this level.” Cannon pointed out after the game that he has learned a lot about his team so far this season and believes his team is on the right path. “I thought our whole team matured after last week at Tennessee, and hopefully they matured after this one,” said Cannon. “We have established who we are from an effort and work ethic standpoint and that’s what will win games in the long run.
