If you are looking to buy a home and just getting started, open houses are a great tool for you to use. There are many reasons why you should use an open house to start your home search: seeing what is available in your market, meeting different agents, learning new neighborhoods, etc. Here is a quick guide on how to best leverage these open houses for anyone looking to buy a new home.
Find some houses that you want to look at. You can use many different sites like Zillow, Realtor.com, and even right here. You can perform your own search and select the "open house" options to see upcoming open houses. Once you get your open house list together your ready for step 2.
Prepare a few questions before going to the open house. This is a great time for you to make contact with different agents and essentially conduct an interview. Not sure what questions to ask. Here are a some that will help you see what type of experience they have. How long have you been selling real estate? Is this your full time job? How many houses have you sold? How can you help me find a home? Remember that when you select an agent you are using them to advise you on likely the biggest purchase of your life. You will want someone you feel like you can trust and is going to put your needs first!
While touring a home, ask questions about the house. If you see something wrong, make sure to point it out. You want to see how they will react if something is out of place.
This last tip is not at all open houses. In some newer construction homes they have WiFi available. If it is available you can have the agent perform a custom home search for you. We Realtors use a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and it has the most accurate information available. If you are looking for something very specific that service/site is the best tool to help you.
